The Science Behind It
The retina is one of the most metabolically active tissues in the entire body — and one of the most exposed to oxidative stress, given its constant interaction with light.
The macula, the small central region responsible for sharp, detailed vision, depends on a dense layer of protective carotenoids that must be continuously replenished through diet or supplementation.
This formula provides those carotenoids in their most bioavailable forms, alongside DHA — the dominant fatty acid in retinal membranes — and vitamin A, the raw material for rhodopsin, the light-sensing pigment in photoreceptor cells.

Ingredient Deep Dive
What's inside — and why
Not just what we include, but the mechanism behind each choice.
Lutein
Carotenoid / Macular Pigment
What it is
Lutein is a xanthophyll carotenoid found in dark leafy greens. Unlike beta-carotene, it is not converted to vitamin A. Instead, it serves a specialized structural and protective function in the eye.
What it does
Lutein selectively accumulates in the macula where it forms the macular pigment optical density (MPOD) layer — acting as a natural blue-light filter and antioxidant shield, protecting photoreceptor cells from oxidative damage caused by light exposure.
Why Biohax includes it
Lutein is central to macular protection. Higher MPOD density is associated with better visual acuity and contrast sensitivity — and maintaining it requires consistent dietary or supplemental intake.
Zeaxanthin
Carotenoid / Macular Pigment
What it is
Zeaxanthin is a xanthophyll carotenoid closely related to lutein. Like lutein, it accumulates selectively in the eye — but with a specific distribution in the central fovea, the very center of the macula responsible for the sharpest central vision.
What it does
Zeaxanthin complements lutein's protective function in the peripheral macula by concentrating in the fovea — together, they protect the full extent of macular tissue. The ratio and combined level of these two carotenoids is directly associated with visual performance.
Why Biohax includes it
Zeaxanthin is inseparable from lutein in the context of macular health. We include both at a ratio that reflects human macular tissue composition.

Formulator Note
Lutein and Zeaxanthin are the only two carotenoids that accumulate selectively in macular tissue. Their ratio in this formula mirrors that of the human macula.
Ingredient Notes
Fish
This formula contains fish-derived omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and/or DHA). Not suitable for individuals with a fish allergy.
